I was born with transposition of the great vessels, a congenital heart defect that meant my body was wired wrong from the start. I had open heart surgery at one year old. Before that, I spent the first stretch of my life inside an incubator. Too small to be held. Too sick to be touched.
My mom was there every day. My family was there every day. They just couldn't pull me out of the incubator and hold me. So they found a way to be with me anyway. They placed a small bear inside the incubator. Something I could feel. Something that carried their love into a place their hands couldn't reach.
That bear wasn't the reason I lived. The love it carried was.
